Sam Gary Sawyers
June 25, 1946 - September 8, 2023
Sam Gary Sawyers, age 77, of Cornersville, TN, formerly of Lincoln County, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, in Murfreesboro, TN. He was born June 25, 1946, in Lincoln County, TN, son of the late Verna and Roy Sawyers.
Sam attended Petersburg High School where he was a four-year letterman in both basketball and football. He was a graduate of Martin Methodist College and affiliated with the church of Christ. He retired after 30 years with Amana/Goodman Manufacturing where he was involved with the union. He was a supporter and coach for the youth league baseball and basketball in Lincoln County for many years. Sam started the Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame in Lincoln County and was inducted as a coach and administrator himself. He also coached grade school basketball at Eight District Elementary School. Sam was the president of the Petersburg Basketball Junior League for nine years and was a member of the Petersburg Lions Club. Sam was an avid Tennessee Vols football fan and a New York Yankees baseball fan. He enjoyed bowling in a men’s league with friends.
Mr. Sawyers is survived by his daughter: Amanda Sawyers; son: Chris (Wendi) Sawyers; step-daughter: Brittany Stilwell; grandchildren: Caleb Sawyers, Nathan Sawyers, Emmie Sawyers, Jeffrey Posey and Lexie Posey; step-grandchildren: Teven Stilwell and Korbyn Stilwell; and great grandchild: Anthony Sawyers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
