Gwendolyn “Gwendy” Jean Coats, born Gwendolyn Jean Raines on December 30, 1942, was the first daughter of Henry and Kathleen Raines. Gwendy passed away at her home in Beaufort, South Carolina on November 16, 2023.

Surviving immediate family include her son, Tom (Chris) Coats of Beaufort, SC; granddaughter, Lindsey Coats of Beaufort, SC; and two sisters, Betty Fullerton of Fayetteville, TN and Judy Phillips of Lawrenceburg, TN. A loving extended family and many friends also survive Ms. Coats.

If you knew Gwendy, you knew she was a graduate of the University of Alabama. She loved to scream “ROLL TIDE” on any given day, not just football Saturdays. Gwendy was a 1960 graduate of Central High School in Fayetteville, TN and she received her Masters degree from Kansas University. She worked as a Home Economics Teacher for the Wichita Kansas School System. Gwendy was a seamstress, embroiderer, and avid crafter and always had a project that she was working on.

There will be a viewing on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home, and a graveside service to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tommy Vann officiating.

Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Gwendolyn “Gwendy” Jean Coats.
