Emily Zweig Carter, beloved mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and distinguished nurse, passed away on January 23, 2026, at the age of 46. She was born on February 21, 1979, in Richmond, Virginia, and made her home in Franklin, Tennessee. Emily was the heart of her family and a steady source of love, warmth, and strength to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her deep compassion, her unwavering devotion to her family, and the boundless love she so freely shared.

Emily was the devoted wife of Mark Allen Carter. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. She was a proud and deeply loving mom to Nash Kingston (15), JB Hutton (12), and Killian Rose (7). Being their mom was Emily’s greatest joy, and she poured herself into their lives with endless encouragement and affection.

Following in the nursing footsteps of her mother, Emily answered a calling grounded in compassion and service. She specialized in Electrophysiology, assisting physicians and caring for patients with exceptional skill and dedication. Her career included noted tenures at Duke University and, most recently, Centennial Heart, where she spent the past 15 years. Emily was recognized multiple times for her outstanding work and was adored by both patients and colleagues. She was known for a truly special bedside manner that put patients at ease and made them feel genuinely seen, heard, and cared for.

Emily was the cherished daughter of Gregory Clark and Rebecca Killian Zweig of Germantown, Tennessee, who raised her with values of kindness, loyalty, and grace that she carried throughout her life. She was a loving sister to Jacob Christian Zweig and his wife, Amy Rodriguez, of Germantown, Tennessee, and a proud aunt to their children, Audrey Elizabeth and John Marshall; to her sister Kathryn Zweig Weisbrod of Denver, Colorado, and her husband, Matthew Francis, and their daughters, Imogene Ivy and Ingrid Margaret; and to her brother Samuel Killian Zweig of Memphis and his wife, Ellen Jordan, and their daughter, Katherine Ingram.

Emily was also the beloved daughter-in-law of David Robert and Delora Shubert Carter of Coldwater, Tennessee, whom she loved dearly and who welcomed her with open hearts as their own. She was a devoted sister-in-law to Robert James Carter and his wife, Kristin King Carter, of Fayetteville, Tennessee, and a proud and loving aunt to their children, Bruce Allen and Sophie Louise.

Emily had a gentle spirit and a generous heart. She had a remarkable way of making people feel safe and cared for through quiet support, thoughtful words, or simply her presence. Her love for her family defined her, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void. Yet her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched at home, at work, in her children’s schools and activities, and far beyond.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff at Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute and the Ingram Cancer Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for their exceptional care, compassion, and unwavering support throughout Emily’s five-year treatment journey. They especially thank Dr. Howard A. “Skip” Burris and Dr. Ben Ho Park, whose dedication and kindness will always be remembered with profound appreciation.

Visitation will be held at St. Philip Catholic Church in Franklin, Tennessee, on Thursday, January 29, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Immediately following the Funeral Mass, family and friends are invited to a reception and celebration of life at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

A private family interment will be held on Friday, January 30, at Carter Hills Cemetery in Coldwater, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Emily’s honor to the St. Philip Catholic Church, the Sarah Cannon Fund at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, the Ingram Cancer Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Alive Hospice, or the National Commodore Club at Vanderbilt University.

Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Emily Zweig Carter.
