Charles Edward Puryear, age 76, of Fayetteville, TN, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was born in Oklahoma City, OK on March 30, 1949, to the late James Morgan and Ruby Irene Bates Puryear. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Puryear was the first to graduate from ROTC in 1968. That same year, he graduated from Harry E. Wood High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Charles was proud to serve his country, completing two honorable stints in the military and receiving an honorable discharge in 1978. His service took him around the world—from the United States to Australia, and even to Guam—earning him the distinction of becoming an honorary “Shellback.” During his time in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Hunley and the USS Wisconsin and had the experience of crossing the Bermuda Triangle.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife: Judy Lana Jones Puryear; daughter: Barbara Jean Puryear Mascari; and sister: Judy Puryear Rowe.

Mr. Puryear is survived by his daughter: Sandra (Bryan) Kirk; grandchildren: Sarah Kirk, Bryan David Kirk, Summer Puryear Miracle, Rebecca Puryear and Jordan Mascari; three great grandchildren; sisters: Patricia Bevels, Mary Haley and Sarah (Randy) West; and brother: Donnie Puryear.

Funeral services for will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with Bryan David Kirk and Rev. Bobby Bates officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Visitation is Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
